3 Winter Roof Damage Issues Business Owners Need To Know

1/14/2019 (Permalink)

Winter can be a hard time for business owners. Winter can cause damage to their homes but they also have to worry about their business. Here are some common issues that business owners need to be aware of as winter approaches.

Ice Dam Formation

When the warm air is rising from the inside of your building, it loosens the shingles as well as the snow on top of the shingles. The melted snow travels to colder parts of the roof where it freezes once again. That creates a blockade for the other snow that melts and falls which causes the water sitting there to seep through the lose shingles or any cracks on that roof. This will lead to water leaking into your building. One good way to prevent this is to keep the gutter clean and install a heat trace cable in the gutter to melt the snow and keep that flow going.

Icicle Formation

Similar to the ice dam formation, icicles are formed when the snow on the roof travels then freezes up on the edge of the roof. They can cause damage to your shingles and gutter and fall on the pedestrians walking by.  The simple tactic of using a rake and removing the icicles should do the trick.

Heavy Rooftop Snow Loads

All roofs are designed and built differently, which means they all support different weights. If a huge snow storm hits and your roof is left with a very large load of snow on it, your roof is running a very high risk of collapsing. And if it is bad enough, it can all fall through into your building and damage the contents in your building. If you see any signs of this problem call SERVPRO immediately.

With all of this being said, having a roof inspection before anything hits is a good idea to keep the building in good shape and everything inside that building. These points can also apply to your home as well.

Winter Time Fires

1/8/2019 (Permalink)

The freezing temperatures are approaching and that means everyone is going to do what they can to stay warm. What people do not think about is the damages one could cause while trying to stay warm on a cold day.

Cold weather means turning up the heat and the use of other heating methods like space heaters, heat blanket, candles, and fire places. All of these things can light up the room if used improperly like keeping them on for too long or placing some of these heat sources too close to flammable objects.

Chilly winter air contains less moisture compared to the air in the other seasons throughout the year. Because of the chilly air, the physical wood structure of the home becomes drier which can lead to electrical fires under the right conditions.

The older the home the more likely it is to be a potential ball of fire. For example, the Clintons' house was built in 1889. An electrical fire occurred and an electrical fire happens when too much electricity is pulled through older wires that cannot handle the capacity.

To prevent these potential problems, have an annual safety inspection to make sure your home is not at risk of lighting up in flames. Here is something to think about, although the total numbers of fire during the winter decreases, the number of structural fires increase.

7 Highly Effective Portable Heater Safety Habits

1/8/2019 (Permalink)

In these cold winter months many of us find it hard to stay warm; our sweaters, wool socks and blankets just aren’t cutting it. So, we resort to other methods to fix the problem. One common method is a portable heater; especially for those sitting at a desk all day! If you are using a portable heater, here are some effective safety habits to keep in mind…

    1. Keep all sides of the heater at least 3 feet from beds, clothes, curtains, papers, sofas, and other items that can catch fire
    2. Never fun the heater’s cord under rugs or carpeting and never power the heater with an extension cord or power strip
    3. Make sure the heater is not near water. NEVER touch it if you are wet
    4. Place the heater on a stable, level, surface, located where it will not be knocked over
    5. Never leave the heater operating while unattended or while you are sleeping
    6. If the heater’s cord or plug is HOT, disconnect the heater and contact an authorized repair person. If any part of the outlet is hot, contact a certified electrician
    7. Check SaferProducts.gov to see if your electric heater has been recalled

Commercial Plumbing Issues

12/3/2018 (Permalink)

It is that time of, leaves are falling and the temperature is dropping, but work must continue. The temperature is dropping which can affect your commercial building.

Pipe Bursting

It is important to keep your pipes in your building in good shape to prevent any problems. As the days get colder, you are running the risk of your pipes freezing over which can cause crack and leaks. This can happen no mater the material. Plastic, copper, or steel can freeze which will make the pipes crack or even burst. A pipe burst can let go around 200 gallons in just one day which will cause major water damage to your commercial building.

Prevention

If you are expecting freezing temperatures, be one step ahead and close the water supply lines and washer connections. To circulate heat to the hidden pipes underneath all sinks, make sure to leave those cabinets open to allow the heat in your home help prevent those pipes from freezing.

A pipe bursting in your business could be a huge problem. It could restrain you from working. There will most likely be standing water inside the building. Call SERVPRO of Howell / Wall immediately after you discover the problem and we will be there to take care of the problem and cut that time that you are not in business way down.

Make This Fall Fire Free

10/12/2018 (Permalink)

The fall season brings cooler temperatures, beautiful colors and an abundance of outdoor activities. Plan ahead this season to help ensure it is safe, and fire-free. By following these safety precautions, your fall festivities will be safe and fun!

  • Fall decorations such as dried flowers and cornstalks are highly flammable. Keep these and other decorations away from open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters.
  • Keep emergency exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes.
  • Teach children to stay away from open flames. Be sure they know to stop, drop and roll if their clothing catches fire.
  • Remember safety first when choosing a Halloween costume. Consider avoiding billowing fabric, and if you choose to make your own costume, choose material that won’t easily ignite if it comes into contact with heat or flame.
  • It is safest to use a flashlight, or a battery-operated candle in a jack-o-lantern. If you are going to use a real candle, use extreme caution, and don’t forget to put it out if you are not going to be around. Place lit pumpkins away from anything that can burn, and out of the way of doorsteps, walkways and yards.

At SERVPRO of Howell/Wall we wish you a happy and safe Halloween.

Immediate Steps to Take if Your Howell/Wall Business Suffers From Water Damage

9/4/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Immediate Steps to Take if Your Howell/Wall Business Suffers From Water Damage Don't let water stop your business take these steps to move your Howell/Wall business after water damage.

Let’s face it, water damage is threatening to your property’s value and can cause some serious, well damage. Whether you’re facing a storm; a flood; leaks from a weakened roof, HVAC or busted pipes; or experience overflowing appliances, water damage can wreak havoc in an array of emergency situations. To prevent further damage and to increase chances of salvation, it is critical to act quickly within the first 24 hours. Considering you have safely evacuated the premises and safety officials have declared it safe, follow these steps to immediately rectify your business from water damage.

Avoid Additional Risks

Upon returning to your property, survey the premises and document any visible structural damage that may further endanger you and your property. Look for signs of warping, loosened or cracked foundation elements, and holes. If safety officials haven’t done so already, contact utility companies to cease all water and electrical sources. Even if the power is still out upon your return, physically turn off the main power line and individual fuses to avoid risk of electrocution should the power be reactivated.

Document Everything

While surveying your property, take photos and document all damages. Digital photos will allow you to properly store, back-up and transfer files quickly and conveniently. Be sure to document all damages prior to removing any water or starting on any repairs; otherwise, you risk decreasing the extent of your insurance coverage.

Contact your Insurance Provider

Contacting your insurance provider is critical immediately following water damage and your return to the property. Your insurance provider will be able to assess the situation, file a claim, determine whether or not the damage is severe enough to send an adjuster, and provide invaluable next steps. They will also ask for the documentation you’ve collected so it’s important to have that readily available. Pro Tip: if government authorities have declared your region a ‘disaster area’, property owners may have access to increased resources, services and financial assistance.

Secure the Property

Place board over broken windows, fasten tarps, and carryout other measures to avoid further leaks and water damage. Be sure to document all of your efforts to secure your property from further damage. If these precautionary steps are not taken and something else happens, additional damages may not be covered by your insurance provider.

Mitigate Mold Damage

It only takes 24-48 hours for mold to develop following a flood or water damage. If items have been wet for less than 48 hours, they may be salvageable. Remove wet contents such as carpeting and furniture as soon as possible. If an item has been exposed longer than 48 hours, it may be harder and more expensive to salvage. If possible, you can start the drying out process within 24 hours and eliminate mold and mildew growth by:

Removing wet furniture or lifting it off of carpet
Place aluminum foil or other carpet separators on furniture to prevent carpet stains
Remove and hang area rugs to dry
Use fans and dehumidifiers to dry out wet areas
Turn air conditioning on to help remove humidity and speed the drying process
Contact SERVPRO of Howell/Wall.

If any amounts of water need more than a mop and you’ve followed the immediate steps to secure your business, water removal may require professional attention. SERVPRO of Howell/Wall has the expertise, training and equipment to quickly remedy water damages and help your business get back to working order faster. Two Important Steps When Dealing with Mold Damage in Howell/Wall

9/4/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Can Help Remove the Moisture Source and Exterminate Mold Spores for Professional Remediation

Mold is unsightly, and its musty smell might make your Montgomery home a less comfortable abode. Some health effects can also be associated with staying in moldy environments over extended periods. Since the spores that produce mold are omnipresent in many parts of a home, the problem can be hard to eliminate. Luckily, almost all cases of mold infestations have a link to moisture, so it is possible to deal with them by eliminating the cause.

Minimizing moisture is one practical step necessary in fixing mold damage in Howell/Wall since microbes like mold thrive well where there is sufficient moisture. Before attempting to dry off the excess moisture, it is essential to find the source, which could be a leaking pipe or appliance. This way it is possible for dehumidifiers to eliminate the excessive moisture. Of course, the infestation or even the musty odor cannot disappear immediately moisture levels come down. This is why our SERVPRO team includes cleanup as part of the remediation.

Removing contaminated materials is another important step. This step applies if there are porous materials in the affected area. Even though you can clean such materials with cleansers and disinfectants, infestations usually exist with the fungal hyphae attaching below the surface of the porous material. It is therefore hard to eliminate the infestation entirely using cleaning agents. Materials like insulation and fabrics such as carpets fall in the removal category if heavily infested with mold.

Cleaning mold from hard surfaces is essential. In this case, cleaning agents are a perfect choice. Our SERVPRO technicians use EPA-registered broad-spectrum disinfectants, which are effective in killing spores. Since these agents only work when applied physically on the affected areas, we use various techniques to reach all surfaces including using foggers that deliver the antimicrobial agents in mist form to hidden areas in your property. We also allow the necessary dwell time and maintain correct PH and temperature levels because they influence the effectiveness of the disinfectants.

For proper remediation, you should call SERVPRO of Howell/Wall at (732) 355-3517. We evaluate the problem and use standard procedures to deal with the problem leaving your property "Like it never even happened."

A Disaster Plan for your Pets

7/27/2018 (Permalink)

General A Disaster Plan for your Pets Creating a disaster plan is essential to keeping your family members of all species safe!

Most people know they should have a disaster plan in place for their families, but if you are faced with a natural disaster, do you have a disaster plan for your pet? Storms, wildfires and floods happen around the world every day and affect thousands of people and their pets. That’s why everyone should have a plan, not only for yourself, but for your Fur Family. To help you plan for the unimaginable, here are our 9 essentials of disaster prepping for your pet:

  1. Proper ID. The most important thing you can do for your pet before a disaster occurs is to make sure they have proper ID. This means having a physical tag containing your current info on their collar which they wear at all times, and having them micro-chipped and registered in a national registry such as the free Found Animals Microchip Registry.
  2. Keep your pet’s vaccinations up to date to reduce their risk of disease and sickness. There are so many unknowns in a disaster. If you are evacuated, your pet may not be able to come with you to shelter and may be held in boarding with other animals whose health status is unknown. If your home is destroyed, your pet may be lost and living outside for a time and subjected to the elements, dirty water supply or worse. Be safe, not sorry, and vaccinate.
  3. Display a Pet Rescue Sticker. Make sure you have a pet rescue window decal in a place visible to rescue workers.
  4. Identify Pet-Friendly Emergency Shelters. Not all emergency shelters or hotels allow pets. Before a disaster hits, call your local emergency management office or animal shelter to see if there are places planned for people and pets to stay together in the event of an emergency. Research pet-friendly hotels away from typical disaster zones, or arrange to stay with family or friends outside of your area. Prepare a few options in a range of distances from your home in case of either local or region-wide emergencies.
  5. Assemble a Pet Emergency Kit. You can buy a compact kit that fits under your seat, a larger bag you can carry on your shoulder, a grab and go bucket with everything your pet could need and add pet-related items to your family’s existing emergency supplies. Your kit should include the following items:
  • Food and Water

Plan to have at least five days of food, water and portable bowls. Dry food should be in resealable plastic bags. If your pet eats wet food, make sure to buy easy open cans so you don’t need a can opener. Prepare a written feeding schedule.

  • Medication and Medical Records

Keep an extra supply of your pet’s regular medication in a waterproof zip lock bag. Also include a copy of your pet’s vaccination record and microchip number.

  • Supplies

For cats, include kitty litter and disposable litter boxes. For dogs, pack plastic waste bags and an extra leash and harness. Beds, blankets, toys and clothing are also useful to keep your pet calm and cozy in an emergency situation.

  1. Store Supplies for a Speedy Exit. Place all of your emergency supplies in a safe, dry, convenient place near your escape route in case you need to leave in a hurry. The safest way to transport a pet in an emergency or disaster is in a carrier or crate, so keep one close to your emergency kit. Frightened pets can be difficult to manage with only a leash and collar.
  2. When a Disaster Strikes, Don’t Hesitate; Evacuate. Not all disasters come with warning, but if they do, follow emergency response recommendations and evacuate as quickly as possible. Disasters are very stressful on both pets and people, and no one can predict how bad things will get. Don’t wait until the last minute to leave. Use your emergency plan as a tool to supplement first responder instructions.
  3. Leave with Your Pets. If the area is not safe for you, it’s not safe for your pets.  It may not be possible to return for your pets, so take them with you from the start.
  4. If Your Pet Gets Lost, Check for Found Pet Alerts. If your pets are separated from you, check your cell phone and email for Found Pet Alerts. When a rescue worker finds your lost pet and starts an alert in the Found Animals Registry, you will be contacted via phone calls, text messages, and emails based on your pet’s microchip registrations. These alerts will provide information on your pet’s location. If you cannot access your phone or email, or are unable to retrieve your pets, your emergency contacts and vet will also be notified.

Grease Fire Do's and Dont's

7/27/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Grease Fire Do's and Dont's Grease fires can happen in any kitchen, knowing how to handle them is important!

There are many different ways a fire can break out, one of the most dangerous being a grease fire. If you lack experience putting out a grease fire, know that you do not treat it the same as you would a "standard" fire. There are certain things that you must do and things you absolutely must NOT do. Please consider the following:

Do

  • Turn off the stove or heat source
  • Smother the fire with the pot lid. Without oxygen, the fire cannot survive.
  • Use baking soda to douse the flames. Flour and other items will not work
  • Use a Class B dry chemical fire extinguisher
  • call 911

Don't

  • Try to put out the flames using water. It will splash the grease, causing the fire to spread
  • Move the item. This could also cause splashing, spreading and could potentially burn you
  • Try to use anything other than baking soda. It will not help

If fire strikes your home or business, call SERVPRO of Howell/Wall  for our expert and professional services.  We have the specialized fire and water damage cleanup and restoration training and experience to quickly restore your home to pre-fire condition. We also have specific training and equipment for odor removal and deep cleaning of upholstery and carpet.

Extending The Life Of A Candle

7/27/2018 (Permalink)

General Extending The Life Of A Candle Tips to extend the life of your candle for smell or survival.Extending The Life Of A Candle

We burn candles for a variety of reasons, whether for the aroma or to light the home due to a power outage. Did you know that you could actually assist them in burning longer?

Tip 1: Freeze your candle. Yes, put it in the freezer! By doing so, you are hardening the wax, which makes it melt more slowly and therefore last longer. It may not be feasible to store all of your candles in your freezer, so simply slip your next-up-to-burn candle into the freezer on the morning or night before you’re planning to light it.

Tip 2: After letting the candle burn long enough for a pool of wax to collect around the wick, blow out the flame. Then, quickly sprinkle table salt into the liquid wax. If necessary, use a toothpick to ensure that the salt actually mixes into the wax and doesn’t just sit on the surface.  Then re-light the candle.  Adding salt serves the same purpose as putting the candle in the freezer—it slows down the rate at which the wax melts, giving you a longer, more economical burn.  What matters most is how long you let the candle burn the first time you light it. Try not to extinguish it until the pool of wax has extended across the diameter of the candle. Blow it out too soon, and you may cause the candle to leave excess wax; if it doesn’t melt on the first lighting, the dry, hard wax around the outside edge will almost never burn.

Tip 3: It can also be helpful to keep the candle wick trimmed to about a quarter inch in length, because longer wicks tend to burn faster.  Leftover wax is a sign that the candle didn’t burn to its full potential. To get the most bang for your buck, make sure that the candle burns both evenly and completely. Finally, remember not to leave the candle near a door or window or in any similarly drafty spot; not only is such a location unsafe, but it can also result in uneven burning.

Summer Water Saving Tips

7/8/2018 (Permalink)

Every state is experiencing the effects of drought, and saving water is on everyone’s mind these days. We waste a lot of water; our showers are too long, and we are often obsessed with an emerald green lawn. We need to change the way we handle and view water and leave behind the outdated and inefficient water management systems of the past.

Here are some tips that will help you save water this summer. Your water bill will be reduced, and you can save yourself some time into the bargain as well as doing some good for the Earth.

  1. Water your yard in the cool parts of the day. Water evaporates more quickly when it’s hot, so run your irrigation system while it’s most likely to stay with your lawn. Make sure you are not watering your sidewalk or your driveway, too. A drip system works quite well in this respect. Replacing your thirsty lawn with a drought tolerant garden would be a great way to save water, and it won’t have to be mowed every week!
  2. Check for leaky toilets. Put a few drops of food coloring into the tank. If the color shows up in the bowl, your tank is leaking, and could be wasting up to 100 gallons of water a day!
  3. Take shorter showers. Trimming just two minutes off of your showers can save up to 1700 gallons of water a year. One way to do this is to turn off the shower while you shave or soap up. Install water-efficient shower heads, toilets, and faucets for a savings of thousands of gallons per year as well.
  4. Cover the pool. Make sure the water in your pool stays there by covering it when you are not using it. This will prevent water loss by evaporation.
  5. Use a car wash. Washing your car by hand can easily use 100 gallons of water, and takes a lot of time and effort, as well. Commercial car washes average 40 gallons or less!
  6. Trap rain water. Collect the water from summer rain storms by getting a water barrel. You can reuse this water for your garden. Green roofs, rain gardens, and other water-saving techniques are called green infrastructure and go a long way towards saving this most precious resource. More and more landowners and city governments are choosing to invest in these and other innovative strategies as ways to save water, reduce pollution, and save millions, and even billions, in costs for new water tanks, tunnels, and other traditional water infrastructures.

TOP THREE PLACES TO CHECK FOR MOLD GROWTH

7/8/2018 (Permalink)

Mold. Just hearing the word can cause us all to cringe. It’s odorous, unsightly, and even dangerous to our health. And it can show up so fast that it can be shocking! Just knowing where to look and what areas are best to practice preventive measures in can help give you peace of mind.

Here are the top three areas to check regularly for mold growth:

The bathroom. This almost goes without saying, since everyone knows that mold likes water. And water is the name of the game when it comes to the bath area! Most bathrooms are cleaned thoroughly at least once a week, and these times are great for checking for mold. Look in the least traveled areas, such as corners of the linen closet, behind the toilet, under the sink. If there are, or have been, any leaks in these places in the past, these areas are in danger until they are fully dry. You can invest in a dehumidifier for your bathroom, and that can be a great help.

The kitchen. This area of your home is also a watery place, and it is used more than any other area in the house besides the bath. Keep an eye out for spills and leaks and clean them up immediately to ensure that they are not attracting mold spores, which are always in our air and cannot be removed. The trick is not giving them a place to land and settle!

The laundry room. This room, since it has large appliances, also has nooks and crannies that are not cleaned as often, since no one ever sees them. Add to that the humidity in the air and possible unseen leaks or drips, and you have a recipe for the establishment of a mold colony. Enlist help, pull the washer and dryer out from the wall regularly, and make sure the areas behind them are clean, dry, and disinfected. Make sure spills are cleaned and dried right away, as well.

Other areas to keep an eye on: hall closets, your garage, and/or basement.

KEEPING YOUR RESTAURANT’S CARPETING CLEAN

7/8/2018 (Permalink)

Your restaurant’s nightly checklist has to be followed to the letter in order to keep your business in great shape and ready for the next business day. Every item has to be thoroughly washed and sparkling clean on a daily basis; the kitchen flooring, stovetops and ovens, utensils, pots and coffee makers…. And then there’s the front of house - bathrooms, host stand, and bar area with all your glassware that needs attention. But you and your team have it all handled, every day.

Flooring in a busy restaurant can be a challenge, as well. Many eateries choose to install hardwood floors, which have to be treated regularly to avoid damage from high heels, spills, and scratches from table and chair movement.

Perhaps, however, your establishment has carpeting. A nightly vacuum and spot cleaning will go a long way towards preventing potential mold growth and other issues that can cause unpleasant odors, but your carpeting will still need a regular deep cleaning to keep floors looking the way you want them to. With carpeting, spills on carpeting don’t come up quite as easily or as completely as those on hardwood flooring, and a carpet in need of deep cleaning can look dull and worn, with the colors no longer as bright and fresh; that can reflect negatively on your guest’s experience. Make sure a deep cleaning is on your cleaning checklist!

Here at SERVPRO of Howell/Wall, we are equipped to handle the toughest carpet cleaning jobs. Our business is experienced with cleanups from fire and water damage in both homes and large commercial enterprises, and mold remediation is one of our specialties! Call us today at (732) 355-3517. WHY YOU SHOULD PRIORITIZE KEEPING YOUR BUSINESS CLEAN

7/8/2018 (Permalink)

Those shows about failing businesses and restaurants are often entertaining and even humorous, at least to us as viewers. But they also highlight an essential detail that businesses sometimes overlook: a clean work area. That might not sound like a big deal, but a clean business sends a powerful message to staff and customers alike.

Listed here are some of the benefits of prioritizing workplace cleanliness:

  • It reduces the need to replace supplies and equipment as often. When dirt and grime are left to build up, they will cause unnecessary wear-and-tear on your office equipment. The keys on your PC keyboard can get sticky, which necessitates a call to IT. Flooring can become stained and unkempt, and office furniture left uncared for is unsightly, sending the wrong message to everyone. Regular cleaning and maintenance will save you costly replacements of these items. SERVPRO of Howell/Wall specializes in all areas of commercial cleaning and restoration.
  • It can help you find and fix damages before they becomes a problem. Regular deep cleaning can help you catch problems you might not notice otherwise and keep you looking good while doing it. You will see the signs of water damage and mold growth much more quickly, and as we all know, damage from leaks are much easier to deal with at the beginning of the issue. The longer damage from a water leak goes on, the higher the costs for repairs are going to be. Taking care of mold is also important for the health of your workforce. Mold spores can often be toxic, and its presence can be a health code violation. SERVPRO of Howell/Wall is your area specialist for mold remediation.

  • It can help employees avoid illnesses and positively affect morale. A dirty working environment can encourage the accumulation of bacteria and viruses, which will adversely affect your employees. Clutter and grime also make it difficult to concentrate and has been proven to cause stress, especially for those people who are highly sensitive to uncomfortable surroundings. When your workers are happy and productive, your customers and clients will know it, and an atmosphere of positivity will affect your business by encouraging repeat sales and referrals.

  • It gives your business an image and reputation of trustworthiness. If your business looks like a mess, most people will assume it’s failing; how can they trust you to care about their concerns if you don’t care about your own? Water-stained walls, unkempt furniture and machinery, dusty light fixtures; all these things will give your prospective customers the idea that you are not a careful proprietor. Not the best way to get people to come back!

Call us here at SERVPRO of Howell/Wall for help with all your commercial cleaning needs. We are experienced in cleanup after water and fire damage, and mold remediation is one of our specialties! Our phone number is: (732) 355-3517, or you can visit our website: SERVPRO of Howell/Wall

Cleaning Up After Smoke Damage

7/8/2018 (Permalink)

Fire, smoke, and soot will affect everything in your home, from the structure to your personal belongings. After a fire, contacting a cleaning professional may be the best decision you can make. A professional cleaning company like SERVPRO of Howell/Wall understands that your furniture, keepsakes, and other precious items are what make your house a home.

SERVPRO of Howell/Wall specializes in restoring the contents of a home or business that have suffered from fire damage or water damage. They will assess all your belongings carefully to determine what items can be restored to their original condition. Professional cleaning companies use several methods to get you back to normal after a fire:

  • Foam Cleaning: This method is used for upholstery since upholstery fabrics can shrink or bleed if water is used.
  • Dry Cleaning: This method is used to clean light residue.
  • Wet Cleaning: This is a very effective cleaning method used to remove moderate to heavy smoke residues.
  • Immersion Cleaning: This method is one where items are dipped into a bath of cleaning product.

Keep in mind that electronics that have been damaged by fire present a serious hazard. Never attempt to turn on or operate any electrical device that could possibly have been affected by a fire! Smoke residue contains acids that corrode metal and can cause electronic failure in that device. Items that you should be careful of are:

  • Televisions
  • Computers and IPads, etc.
  • DVD and CD players
  • Cell Phones

Documents and photographs can suffer a lot of damage in a fire, and many contain information or records that can be devastating to lose permanently. SERVPRO technicians are experienced in document restoration.

If the damage to your home or business is such that it will need extensive restoration or cleaning. SERVPRO of Howell/Wall can organize an efficient move-out process of the affected areas. Removal from the area will result in a quicker remodeling process and will also protect your belongings from any further potential damage during that process. After the restoration is complete, move-in can be coordinated easily.

If your home or business has suffered damage from fire, water, or mold, give SERVPRO of Howell/Wall a call today at (732) 355-3517,  or visit our website: SERVPRO of Howell/Wall

How to handle gasoline safely

6/23/2018 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Howell/Wall, we have first-hand experience dealing with the results of fire damage. Fires are physically and emotionally devastating to the victims. We embrace fire-prevention efforts and we encourage everyone to follow common-sense advice to prevent fires.

The American Petroleum Institute offers the following guidelines for handling gasoline.

Gasoline is an important part of our everyday lives. It lets us run our cars and trucks, getting the kids to school and the groceries home. It helps us keep our grass and gardens looking good, powering mowers and lawn care equipment. It lets us get away on vacation, running boats, off-road vehicles, and motorcycles.

But gasoline can be dangerous if not handled or stored properly. Gasoline should only be used for its intended purpose – as a motor fuel – and stored only when absolutely necessary. It should not be used as a solvent, cleaner, barbecue starter or for any other non-engine use.

Take The Following Precautions

  • Your local and state governments are the first places you should check for standards and regulations on gasoline storage. For example, fire codes and regulations restrict the amount of gasoline an individual homeowner can store (usually no more than 25 gallons), in approved containers of less than five gallons capacity each.
  • Gasoline must be stored in an approved container or tank. Keep gasoline containers tightly closed and handle them gently to avoid spills.
  • Gasoline is a flammable liquid and should be stored at room temperature, away from potential heat sources such as the sun, a hot water heater, space heater or a furnace, and a least 50 feet away from ignition sources, such as pilot lights.
  • Gasoline vapors are heavier than air and can travel along the floor to ignition sources. Do not smoke where gasoline is handled or stored.
  • Put gasoline in a small engine (like a lawnmower) only when the engine and attachments are cool.
  • Store gasoline in a building separate from the house or place of occupancy, such as a shed or garage. Always keep gasoline out of reach from children.
  • For better ventilation, it is best to handle gasoline outdoors.
  • Do not mix even a small amount of gasoline with kerosene or diesel. Do not use gasoline in kerosene heaters or lamps.
  • Minor spills should be absorbed with sawdust, paper or rags. Larger spills may be contained and collected. Check with your local government or hazardous waste disposal center to determine the proper avenues for disposing of spilled gasoline.
  • Place recovered gasoline and cleanup materials in approved, labeled containers for proper disposal. Never dispose of spilled gasoline or cleaning materials on the ground or into your garbage, drains, toilets or sewers. If you do, it might cause a fire, or seep into streams, bays, lakes or your groundwater.

Prepare your family for storms

6/23/2018 (Permalink)

Large storms and heavy rains have hit our area hard over the last few months, now is the time to prepare for whatever Mother Nature throws our way. An Emergency Supply Kit is a good place to begin.

An Emergency Supply Kit is simply a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.

Try to assemble your kit well in advance of an emergency. You may have to evacuate at a moment’s notice and take essentials with you. You will probably not have time to search for the supplies you need or shop for them.

You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours.

Recommended Items to Include in an Emergency Supply Kit:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather
Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
  • Local maps
  • Phone charges with adapters to allow charging in an automobile

Keep our number handy as well, (732) 355-3517. If you suffer storm damage to your home or property, SERVPRO of Howell/Wall can be there to take immediate action. We can help minimize secondary damages caused by severe storms.

Don't Kill Mold With Bleach

6/23/2018 (Permalink)

When most people see mold they think of treating it with bleach. To an untrained professional, cleaning mold with bleach can seem right. But here are three reasons why bleach is not the most effective choice to rid your home or business of mold.

1.    Bleach loses effectiveness over time.

Chlorine bleach rapidly loses its effectiveness. Try leaving a glass of chlorinated water out on the counter for a few days. You’ll find the chlorine will evaporate. This happens within bleach  containers as well. Evaporation means that it will be hard to determine the true potency of your chlorine bleach solution because the chlorine can escape through plastic. Perhaps the chlorine bleach you’re using has been sitting at the store, or in your home for months or longer. That will lessen its power to kill mold.

2.    Bleach does not kill mold on porous surfaces. In fact, bleach can contribute to mold growth.

Yes, chlorine bleach can kill surface mold. But mold can grow deep roots within porous surfaces like wood and drywall. Those roots will not be affected by bleach. The bleach you apply remains on the surface while the water in the bleach goes deeper and can feed the mold growth.

And not only does mold have roots, mold also releases spores. These mold spores can get into the air and land anywhere. Once spores travel and land elsewhere, if the environment is right, more mold will grow. Chlorine bleach cannot stop mold from spreading in this way.

3.    Bleach is toxic.

Chlorine bleach produces fumes that pollute the air and can become harmful to humans and pets. Chlorine bleach also generates a by-product called dioxin, which is linked to cancer. If you use bleach over time you can build up these pollutants in your home, business, or any environment.

So, you can use bleach to temporarily kill what’s on the surface but treating mold with bleach alone is not effective in the long run. You won’t know how potent the bleach you use is and using bleach means exposing yourself to harmful fumes.

Different Types of Mold

6/18/2018 (Permalink)

From the Ordinary

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment. In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified. Fungi produce some very useful results. Yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing breads, baked goods, and other food products, including some alcoholic beverages. The unique flavor of blue cheese is a result of mold. An edible mushroom is simply a type of fungi, and lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold (Penicillin chrysogenum). Even though some forms of mold can pass value to our lives, other forms of mold can be harmful.  Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

To the Unhealthy

Intrusion of water into your home or place of business can result in mold growth. Water intrusion can result from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks and poor humidity control. When water intrusions are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth. Some amount of mold spores are normally present in most environments. If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply. Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall, and insulation, provide a food source for mold to flourish. Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health hazard for your family and pets.

If you see or suspect mold in your home or business, contact SERVPRO of Howell/Wall at (732) 355-3517

The most common plumbing issues

6/12/2018 (Permalink)

You depend on your plumbing each and every day, from the hot water in your shower to the water boiling on your stove. As such, it’s important to maintain your plumbing regularly to make sure there aren’t any major issues such as leaks or sewage backups. But plumbing problems can still occur with regular maintenance, so it’s good to be aware of common plumbing issues and what you can do to solve them or minimize damage to your home.

Low Water Pressure

Proper water pressure is necessary for washing your hands, cleaning dishes, and taking a shower. If you’ve noticed a significant drop in your home’s water pressure, you probably have a clogged pipe. It’s also possible that you need to fully open your shutoff valve. If you’re only having water pressure issues with one faucet, the solution may be as simple as cleaning the aerator or removing a nearby clog.

Dripping Faucet

Depending on the severity of the drip, a dripping faucet can raise your water bill and waste a significant amount of water—not to mention how annoying it can be. Luckily, fixing a dripping faucet is usually as simple as replacing seats and springs or a washer in the faucet.

Running Toilet

It happens so frequently: minutes after flushing your toilet, you can still hear the toilet running as if the bowl is filling with water. This is an incredibly annoying problem to have, but usually, an easy one to fix. Remove the lid from your toilet tank and make sure that your tank ball, flapper valve, and flush valve are working properly—if any of them are sticking or not functioning right, they’re easy to replace.

Clogged Drain

Clogged or slow drains are probably the most common plumbing problem. Plumbing pipes are designed to allow water and waste to flow through freely, but over time, built up hair, soap scum and other debris can form a clog in your drain that prevents water from passing. This is almost sure to happen in any home given enough time. You can use vinegar and baking soda to break up clogs in your sink, or you can buy a drain auger and remove the clog manually.

Sometimes the clog may be deeper in your pipes or too severe to easily remove, look into professional plumbing services; they have the equipment and expertise to clear clogged drains without causing damage to your plumbing. If you have sewage damage as a result of a clogged drain or other plumbing issues, please call SERVPRO of Howell/Wall (732) 355-3517

Leaking Pipes

Leaks aren’t just an annoyance; they can significantly increase your water bill and quickly cause damage to your home. If you have a leaking pipe that’s beyond a slow drip, shut your water off as soon as possible. If there is any chance of mold or structural damage to your home, call SERVPRO of Howell/Wall (732) 355-3517to avoid spending a fortune on repairs. Leaking pipes generally need to be replaced, but you can use marine tape or epoxy to cover small leaks temporarily—just remember to shut the water off first.

No Hot Water

Have you ever rolled out of bed and into the shower only to find there’s no hot water? It’s not a good experience. Chances are you’ve got something wrong with your water heater, most probably an electrical problem such as a thermostat or element. If you’re not comfortable troubleshooting your water heater, it’s a good idea to get help from a trained, knowledgeable professional.

Plumbing truly is an essential part of our everyday lives. We can’t all be professional plumbers, but with a little bit of research and hard work, you can stay cool, calm and collected in the face of a plumbing emergency

If you have water damage as a result of any of these or other plumbing issues, please call SERVPRO of Howell/Wall (732) 355-3517

4 Flameless Alternatives to Candles

6/3/2018 (Permalink)

Unattended candles pose a major fire risk. Candle fire can ignite nearby combustibles or be accidentally knocked over. Whether you are looking for flameless alternatives for a special occasion or everyday use, there are several safer options that still capture the desirable look or scent of your favorite candles. Here are four candle alternatives to consider for decorating or lighting purposes.

1. Battery-operated candles: Candles that run on batteries flicker like real candles and some are made of scented wax. Choose from a variety of different shapes and sizes, ranging from tea lights to pillars.

2. Christmas lights or fairy lights: Create enchanting effects indoors or outdoors with strings of lights. Consider LED lights if you want to make these lighting methods more efficient.

3. Candle warmers: Choose from electric bases or larger lamp-style models that are designed to accommodate traditional wax candles that you buy or make. In addition to these candle alternatives, you can also spread a fragrance with oil warmers or wax warmers.

4. Reed diffusers: Placing reeds in oil is an elegant air freshening solution that spreads a scent without the use of battery-operated and electrical devices or fire.

Candle fires are most common during the holiday season, starting in Halloween and going through New Year's Day celebrations. You may prefer to replace candles in decorations with newer flameless alternatives. Battery-operated candles can also make safer centerpieces or place-settings at a weddings or any other formal event.

For day to day use, candle alternatives are perfect for places like bathrooms or bedrooms where they may be left unattended for long stretches of time. You should never leave a burning candle where you cannot observe it and ensure that a fire does not start. If you do experience a candle fire, contact a damage restoration company that specializes in fire and smoke odor remediation, contact SERVPRO of Howell/Wall at (732) 355-3517 or visit us on the web at http://www.SERVPROhowellwall.com for more information on fire damage.

Fire extinguisher knowledge (part 2 of 2)

5/3/2018 (Permalink)

This blog post is a continuation of "Fire extinguisher knowledge part 1" from earlier this week.

The fourth type of fire extinguisher is the wet chemical extinguisher. The wet chemical extinguisher helps in that it focuses on removing heat from the fire in order to extinguish a fire and is most effective on fires made from paper, wood or plastics.

The fifth type of extinguisher is the clean agent. This type of extinguisher focuses on breaking the chemical reaction of a fire and is best worked on fires caused by flammable liquids, electrical equipment or combustibles such as wood or trash.

The sixth type is the dry powder extinguisher which focuses on separating the oxidizing agent from the fuel source and is most useful on fires created by combustible metals.

The seventh is the water mist extinguisher. This extinguisher is mainly water and focuses on cooling the fire and adds a cleaning agent to simplify the mess and should mainly be used on fires caused by electrical content.

The eighth and final extinguisher is the cartridge operated dry chemical and is similar to the clean agent in that it interrupts the chemical reaction of the fire

Fire extinguisher knowledge (part 1 of 2)

4/30/2018 (Permalink)

In the case of a fire emergency, both knowing general facts and tips on fire extinguishers can help exponentially when putting out any kind of fire. This will be one of two blogs explaining the facts on extinguishers.

The different types of extinguishers.

In total there are eight different types of fire extinguishers, the first is water and foam based. This type focuses on taking the heat element out of a fire and should mainly used on a fire made from wood, paper or plastic.

The second type of extinguisher is carbon dioxide based that focuses on taking away the oxygen element of a fire, and should only be used on fires made from flammable liquids such as gas or oil, or fires from electrical equipment such as outlets or transformers.

The third is a dry chemical extinguisher. This type is the most common of extinguishers and focuses on interrupting the chemical reaction of a fire triangle. (The fire triangle is what makes up a fire; Heat, Fuel, and an oxidizing agent which is normally oxygen) This extinguisher should be mainly used on; material fires caused from wood or plastic, fire caused from a flammable liquid such as gas, and fires made from electrical equipment.

Keeping Your Home or Business Fresh!

What Is Duct Cleaning?

This process refers to the cleaning of various system components of your heating and cooling system. The components that should be regularly cleaned include grilles, supply and return air ducts, heat exchangers, coils, and unit housing.

When not cleaned, these components can become contaminated with dust, dirt, and pollen. In addition, moisture can even result in mold growth, which often has harmful health effects. A thorough cleaning, however, can prevent such contamination and keep your indoor air at a high quality.

How Can It Help Remove Foul Odors?

When the ducts are thoroughly cleaned with proper equipment, professionals can remove dander, mold, dust, and other contaminants in your air vents. These particles are generally the cause of foul odors. For example, mold often causes a musty smell, while pet fur and dander trapped in the ducts may cause other odors. To truly remove these smells, the process sanitizes and deodorizes all areas that are affected.

Grease looks like a liquid when you’re done cooking, but that’s because it’s still hot, hot, hot! As soon as grease hits your cold pipes, it cools down and becomes a solid, sticking to the pipes’ insides and trapping food residue.
Don’t flush those solids!
This includes disposable diapers, hygiene products, or any other items that do not dissolve in water. Aim for the trash can, not the toilet!
Avoid throwing wet wipes into the toilet.
Even if the label says “flushable.” They can still become stuck in your pipes, especially if there are other things already trapped down there.
Beware long hair!
Hair is a major cause of pipe blockage, so instead of watching your hair go down (or not go down) the drain in the shower, take some action! Pick up any hair gathered around your drain and throw it out into the trash.
Never throw paper towels down the toilet.
Paper towels are built for absorption and durability, so they don’t break down easily when flushed; this often ends up causing issues in your sewer line.
Keep an eye on large trees growing near your sewer lines.
Trees are known for growing roots deep into the ground and causing movements or breaks in your pipes. So, it’s important to check nearby sewer lines and have them moved or repaired before the roots take over.

April Showers Bring May Flowers and More...

4/10/2018 (Permalink)

April showers help to bring us the most vibrant May flowers and we are so happy with this change of season. However, when April showers are more like torrential, relentless downpours we could face a flooded basement and other water damage causing costly repairs. Flooding generally occurs in the springtime as the result of heavy rains that cannot be adequately absorbed by the still thawing earth. Particularly formidable are the flash floods resulting from thunderstorms, swiftly melting snow, ice jams in creeks, and then there is the fearsome “El Nino." Consider if more than one of these circumstances happens at the same time, you have the potential for a catastrophe with flooding waters and raging mudslides.

Homeowners you can take some simple precautions to secure your property and keep your possessions safe.

Elevate:Keep your furnace, water heater, electrical planels above predicted water levels to protect yourself from costly home replacements.

Install check valves:These valves close to prevent the backward flow of liquid and prevent water from backing up into the drains in your home.

Build barriers:Use sandbags to create flood walls to prevent or reduce flow of water into your home.

Waterproof the basement:Use a waterproofing compound to seal the walls of your basement.

Clean:Clean gutters, drains and downspouts for proper water flow.

Purchase flood insurance:Most standard homeowners' and business insurance policies unfortunately do no cover flood damage. In the event of a flood, you would be responsible for covering the full cost of repairs and replacing items damaged.

There is help close by should you experience an unfortunate event with your home or business. Mold vs Mildew: What is the Difference?

4/2/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Mold vs Mildew: What is the Difference? Simple Chart to describe the difference between Mold and Mildew (Mold Left v Mildew Right)

When it comes to mold and mildew, many often wonder, “What is the difference?” HGTV.com compares mold and mildew to siblings, stating that they have a few matching characteristics but they also have some striking differences.

As for similarities, they both strive in warm, moist areas and they both are able to grow on a multitude of surfaces. They are also both two types of fungi that no one is ever happy to find in their home!

Differences between mold and mildew can be seen in their appearance. Mold is usually fuzzy in appearance and can be various different colors, but it is most often black or green. Mildew, on the other hand, usually grows in a flat pattern and may appear powdery. It is usually white or gray in color. One interesting difference between mildew and mold is that there is no use for mildew. On the contrary, some molds are actually used in food production. For example, Penicillium is used in the production of cheese.

While mold and mildew definitely have differences, the methods to prevent mold and mildew in the home are very much the same. All areas of the home need to be kept dry and moisture-free. Humidity levels inside the home should be checked and controlled. Any leaks need to be repaired quickly and HVAC systems should be inspected regularly.

SERVPRO of Howell/Wall specializes in mold testing and remediation. If you suspect mold is an issue in your home, give us a call today! (732) 355-3517.

Mold Prevention Tips

3/29/2018 (Permalink)

In order for mold to grow and thrive, there must be excess moisture, food, the right temperature and lack of ventilation.  The most important step that any property owner can take is to identify any humidity, moisture or water problems before they create bigger more costly issues. Look for any water or moisture.  Pay special attention around pipes, in basements and crawl spaces.  Recognize musty or moldy odors, which indicate mold growth.  Your sense of smell may alert you to potential problems you cannot see.   Control humidity in bathrooms and wherever water is repeatedly used.  Exhaust fans, proper caulking and effective cleaning with a bleach based product will help keep problems away.  Inspect your HVAC systems and air conditioners.  Regular inspection and maintenance can identify moisture problems or drain clogs before they get worse.

If moisture or mold  is spotted contact a SERVPRO of Howell/Wall and our professional team will come out and take a look.  Call us anytime, 24/7, 365 days a year (732) 355-3517.

Make Your Home Fire Safe

3/21/2018 (Permalink)

Protecting your family in your home is important and fire is something nobody wants to think about. Unfortunately, fires can and do happen. The best way to prevent a house fire is to take some precautionary steps and fireproof your home.

5 Quick Steps to Fire Safety

  1. Remove Clutter - Clutter can cause fires, make fires worse and even stop you from getting out of your home during a fire. Get rid of it or at least reduce it.
  2. Check Your Smoke Alarms Often - Your smoke alarms will alert you of a fire before you see or smell smoke. Check them at least every six months.
  3. Keep A Fire Extinguisher In Your Home - A fire extinguisher can be used to put out some small fires and stop them from spreading. Every home should have one. If you have a multiple story home it's a good idea to have one easily accessible on each level.
  4. Never Leave Candles Unattended - Candles can easily catch furniture, papers and even hanging pictures and décor on fire. Never leave your candles unattended.
  5. Check Your Wires - Check your electric wires often to make sure they are not rips or shorts. Also make sure your wall sockets are not too full and that all the plugs are secure. A fire safe home will help you and your family feel safer and sleep better at night. Take the time to do it right.

If a fire does happen, first call the fire department. Once the blaze has been put out you can contact the highly trained professionals at SERVPRO of Howell/Wall to service your home and repair and restore after a fire damage.  Call (732) 355-3517 24/7 365 days a year.

Most Common Causes of House Fires

3/14/2018 (Permalink)

Here are top 5 most common causes of house fires as identified by the National Fire Protection Association.

  1. Candles

From 2007-2011, the NFPA says there were an average of 10,630 fires in the U.S. that were started by candles, causing 115 deaths, 903 injuries and approximately $418 million in property damage. That is an average of 29 candle fires per day.

Safety tips:

  • Never leave a candle burning near flammable items.
  • Never leave a candle burning in a child’s room or an unoccupied room.
  • Make sure candles fit securing into candle holders so they won’t tip over.
  • Blow out any candles before leaving a room or going to sleep
  1. Smoking

While the number of fires caused by smoking is trending downward, the NFPA found that there were still an average of 17,600 related fires per year resulting in 490 deaths and more than $516 million in property damage.

Safety tips:

  • If you smoke, consider smoking outside.
  • Use wide, sturdy ashtrays to catch butts and ashes.
  • Look for cigarette butts under furniture and between seat cushions to make sure no lit butts have fallen someplace where they can’t be seen.
  • Don’t smoke in bed, when you’re tired or around medical oxygen.
  1. Electrical & Lighting

According to the NFPA, in 2011 approximately 47,700 home structure fires were caused by some sort of electrical failure or malfunction. These resulted in 418 deaths, 1,570 injuries and $1.4 billion in property damage.

Safety tips:

  • Don’t overload outlets or electrical cords.
  • Make sure you have the right cord for the job – inside cords for inside, heavy duty/outside cords for outdoor use.
  • Don’t leave Christmas lights, Christmas trees, or halogen lights on overnight or when not at home.
  • Consider having an electrician perform an annual checkup of your home’s wiring.
  1. Dryers & Washing Machines

Clothes dryer fires happen more often than one might think, accounting for 16,800 home structure fires in 2010 and doing more than $236 million in property damage.

Safety tips:

  • Clean the lint screen frequently and don’t run the dryer without it.
  • For gas and propane dryers, make sure there aren’t any leaks in the lines.
  • Vent the dryer to the outside of the house and ensure nothing blocks the vent pipe.
  • Clean the vent pipe and the area where the screen is housed.
  • Keep the area around the dryer free of combustible materials.
  1. Lightning

From 2007-2011, NFPA says there were an average of 22,600 fires per year caused by lightning strikes.

Safety tips:

  • Stay away from doors and windows during an electrical storm.
  • Do not use corded phones, computers, TVs or other electrical equipment during storms.
  • Unplug major electronics – TVs, stereo equipment, computers and microwaves to minimize damage if there is a lightning strike close by.
  • Avoid plumbing such as sinks, baths and faucets during a thunderstorm.

What You Need to Know About Mold in HVAC Systems

3/5/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is a natural occurrence that can grow in many different environments as long as the conditions are in its favor. Unfortunately, this is often true for HVAC systems and air ducts, which is concerning because the air flow allows the mold to travel to various areas of the building. HVAC cleaning can reveal such mold growth, and it goes without saying that cleaning vents on a regular basis should be on the to-do list of every property owner in East Naples, Florida. Here’s what you need to know about mold in HVAC systems.

How Do You Know If Your HVAC System Has a Mold Issue?

The first step of ridding your heating, ventilation and air conditioning system of mold is knowing common signs that indicate mold growth. Examples of this are:

• Visible mold in air ducts, drip pan or vents
• Mold smell
• Standing water or high level of moisture in parts of the building

Why Does Mold Grow in HVAC Systems?

Mold in HVAC systems is a problem that many property owners are faced with because it is a breeding ground for mold. Mold grows in moist environments, and condensation or leaks in HVAC systems can provide this moisture. Building in warm areas with high humidity are at a higher risk of developing mold issues. Furthermore, the dust that collects in air ducts is a food source to mold as it contains organic materials, such as skin cells. These organic materials, as well as mold spores, often come from outside through the ducts.

How Can You Prevent Mold in HVAC Systems?

The best way to prevent mold is regular maintenance and HVAC cleaning done by a professional. This should be done at least once a year. Additionally, you have to change your filters once a month and may consider using a HEPA filter. If you live in a humid area, a dehumidifier can prove itself to be very helpful.

Should you notice mold in your HVAC system, it’s important to have an experienced mold remediation professional perform the necessary HVAC cleaning. Always keep in mind that it is crucial to address the mold problem as soon as possible.

Fire Damage Restoration For Businesses And Homes

2/23/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Fire Damage Restoration For Businesses And Homes Trash can fire

A fire at your business or in your home can mean major losses. If a fire starts, remember to stay calm and act rationally. Having quick access to a written plan of the steps you need to take after fire damage can save precious time and keep your fire damage losses down.

After the fire in your business or home is put out, take precautionary measures to prevent injury and further losses. Your best bet is often to call a fire damage restoration company.  Or you may want to handle the fire damage restoration yourself. If so, here are some steps to consider:

1. Think long and hard before deciding not to use an emergency fire damage restoration service

Nearly every corner in the country now has 24/7 access to an experienced, professional fire damage service like SERVPRO of Howell/Wall. Companies like ours help reduce the fire, smoke, and soot damage at businesses and in private residences. Involving the fire damage restoration professionals also reduces the risk of injury. The professionals have the right equipment and training to safely deal with the aftermath of a fire. Commercial fire damage usually results in a lot of smoke smell. Smoke smell can be a health hazard to anyone working in or near the premises. Commercial fire damage services can help to quickly get rid of the smoke damage.

2. Evaluate the extent of the fire damage

You’ll want a complete and accurate assessment of all damage so you can determine how much it will cost you to restore your business or home. An accurate fire damage assessment will quicken the process of restoration. Speeding the process allows you to get back to your daily activities in the shortest time possible. For businesses this means less business interruption, less revenue loss, and a greater chance of recovering the full extent of your business.

Understanding the level of fire damage will also help you determine what items you need to get rid of. This will help to reduce the smoke smell in your business or home. Your insurance company will also want a full and accurate assessment of  fire damage so they can pay your claim efficiently.

For professional fire, smoke, and soot restoration call SERVPRO Of Howell/Wall at (732) 355-3517.

  1. Prevent further damage

Evaluate beyond the area that seems to be fire damaged. Take a good look at your entire property. Sometimes business owners or homeowners miss a burned window or a damaged roof. If you don’t find all the fire damage you risk leaving conditions that could lead to further fire damage. One example is holes in the roof. They are particularly dangerous and must be addressed before people move back into the business or home. Another example is missing a water pipe or water tap that’s suffered damage. Check all your utilities, including your water. If you notice any leaking taps or pipes, seal them to prevent further damage.

    4. Start fire damage restoration

Sometimes a fire’s flames and heat do less damage than the smoke and soot the fire creates. Breathing in smoke can be hazardous. Soot can invade porous surfaces and damage furniture, carpets, drapes, and other valuable items. Commercial fire damage companies know how to clean up soot and smoke damage. The longer you wait to deal with soot and smoke the more damage they can do.

The smell caused by smoke damage is not very easy to get rid of, especially if you decide to handle the restoration process yourself. To do this, you might have to dispose of badly burned items. Soot damage will usually coat items such as curtains, and these might need to be washed thoroughly. Also, soot damage affects the solid surfaces of your home. These will need to be cleaned using a solution made up of vinegar, dish soap, and water. If the carpets and furniture are not badly burned, you should clean them using a HEPA vacuum. This is more effective in getting rid of the smoke damage since the particles are not blown back into your home environment. Finally, you should use an exhaust fan to remove the smoke smell in your building.

For professional fire, smoke, and soot restoration call SERVPRO Of Howell/Wall at (732) 355-3517.

And what about water? The fire cleanup process often involves getting rid of standing water. If any pipes or tanks were affected by the soot damage, you will need to purify the water before you use it. Don’t risk getting poisoned.

In the process of fire cleanup, you should be careful not to touch any wires that may have been affected by the fire, or water.

5. See if professionals can save valuable items that appear destroyed

After a fire some items will probably have to be thrown away. But sometimes what looks like an item that is not salvageable can be restored by professionals. Books, leather items, and other valuables might fit into this category.

Help Is Here

With all these heavy rains, mold

Mold Remediation With all these heavy rains, mold Picture of Suspected Mold Growth

Where to Test for Black Mold in Your Home

Black mold is one of the worst fears you might have as a homeowner. Toxic black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) grows in common household features such as carpet, drywall, insulation, and sub-flooring. It grows when these household materials have been in contact with moisture. As it grows, it releases spores into the air. These spores can be harmful or even fatal to humans. At low levels of exposure, spores can cause respiratory problems and irritation; at severe levels of exposure, it can cause bleeding in the lungs and severe nausea and vomiting.

Where to Test for Black Mold

Testing for mold is essential, and you should have a dwelling inspected for black mold before you buy it or sign a lease. If you suspect there may be black mold in your home, or you have never had your home tested, contact SERVPRO of Howell/Wall for professional mold remediation services in the Howell and Wall area. While many aspects of home-ownership can be handled in a D.I.Y. fashion, black mold is not something to be messed around with.

Carpet

Black mold loves to live on the carpet. Dust collects in carpet fibers and those same fibers trap the humidity and dampness that enables mold to grow. Carpets in below-ground levels are especially susceptible to mold as there is more humidity there.

Carpet mold is often not visible from the surface, except in severe cases, which makes testing for it necessary even if you don't see any evidence.

Air Conditioning and Heating Vents

Air conditioning and heating vents actually create ideal conditions for black mold to grow. Dual-purpose vents that both heat and cool your house raise that risk as they are in constant use.

When you have mold in your air vents, those spores are being circulated throughout your home. The sooner you can perform mold remediation procedures, the better. SERVPRO of Howell/Wall has a 24-hour mold emergency service hotline to quickly begin the process of cleaning your air vents.

Drywall

Mold is unfortunately common in drywall, as it traps humidity. This is especially common as the seasons change from winter into spring. Because of the nature of it, mold in drywall is rarely visible except in severe cases. For this reason, it's imperative to have a potential home be tested for mold in the walls before you sign a lease or put down a deposit.

There was also significant damage to the kitchen.  We need to remove the laminate floor in order to dry the plywood subfloor.  As with all our losses, we try to preserve and protect as much as possible and fortunately for the insured and their insurance company, we were able to clean, dry and salvage much of the content.

After using our advanced techniques and fleet of dehumidifiers and air movers, this house had a “dry” bill of health.  Thank you to this homeowner for trusting SERVPRO of Howell/Wall when disaster struck and we are thrilled to have put their home well on its way to making this leaky kitchen pipe “Like it never even happened.”

Home Maintenance Checklist to be Ready for Spring

General Home Maintenance Checklist to be Ready for Spring Spring is Here!

Punxsutawney Phil said we would have six more weeks of winter and he was right.  But winter has past and now its time for spring.  Here is a checklist of things to check on your home this spring from your friends at SERVPRO of Howell/Wall

1:  Examine the shingles on your roof.  Now that winter is gone, you want to check to make sure that you haven’t been damaged or lost.  Any shingles that cracked, buckled or loose need to be replaced in order to keep your house dry through April showers.

2: While your up there, examine your chimney, if you have one, for damage.  Also, its not a bad idea to get a chimney sweep to examine and clean the flue.

3:  Check your wood, including the trim around windows, doors, railings and decks with th a screwdriver to probe for trouble spots.  Be sure you make your repairs before the spring storms do more damage to your wood.

4:  Check your gutters to make sure they are still secure or leaking.  Also, make sure gutters are unclogged, free of debris, and that they are not draining into the foundation.

5:  Inspect your concrete slabs for cracks.  If you have cracks, fill them silicone caulk or concrete crack filler, then, when the weather cooperates, power wash and seal the concrete.

6:  Time to check the outside faucets that may have been damaged in the freezing temps of winter.   Turn on your faucet and try and stop the flow of water with your thumb.  If you can stop the water, that is an indication the pipes inside the home are damaged and need to be replaced.

7:  Have your outside AC unit serviced by a qualified HVAC contractor.  Have your unit cleaned annual to keep your system running efficiently and at peak performance.

Thanks for reading and enjoy your Spring.

Water Damage Asbury Park: We Specialize in Water Damage Damage to the ceiling due to water pipe burst

Recently disaster struck for one resident in Asbury Park when a pipe burst on the 3rd floor of their home.  The pipe burst caused major damage to the lower floors and over a foot of water in the basement.  SERVPRO of Howell/Wall was called to begin emergency water mitigation services.

First, we accessed the damage and packed out all the salvageable items from the home and are storing them for the duration of the clean-up and rebuilding process.  Unfortunately for this home owner there was a lot of personal items that could not be saved.  Those items were inventoried and disposed of in multiple on site 30 yard dumpsters.

This Asbury Park home was constructed with drywall over plaster on every wall.  The demolition of the water damaged walls was a extremely labor intensive and down right back breaking for the team of SERVPRO of Howell/Wall, but as always, the team was up to the task!  After several days, the demolition of the water damaged first and second was complete and we could begin the next phase of this project…drying.

SERVPRO of Howell/Wall needed to use our industrial-sized drying equipment to remove the remaining moisture left behind by the breaking of this 3rd floor pipe.  We worked with the homeowner and utility company to get the power restored to the home to allow us to complete the drying process with our dehumidifiers and air movers.  After several days of drying, our work was complete and the homeowner was ready to begin the rebuilding phrase.

We want to thank this homeowner for trusting SERVPRO of Howell/Wall when disaster struck and we kept our promise to make it “Like it never happened”, a promise we make to everyone who trusts us with their homes.

SERVPRO of Howell/Wall is your go to professional when disaster strikes.  Recently we were called to action for SERVPRO’s expert fire mitigation services.  We were on the scene of a house fire in Wall Township.  The fire started in the attic and caused extensive damage throughout the home.

We started our work by conducting an initial inspection of the fire damage throughout the home.  Upon our inspection, we immediately mobilized air scrubbers to begin filtering the inside air of all the impurities left behind by the fire and to help with odor control.

Next, we arranged for on-site storage of our homeowner’s salvageable belongings.   We cleaned and packed the items that could be saved.  After storing and cleaning, clean up on the structure damage began.  We demolished the affected areas of the house, which included fire and water damaged floors, walls and ceilings.  In order to prevent disaster from striking again during cleanup, the utilities were turned off, but at SERVPRO of Howell/Wall, we are fully equipped with an on-site generator to power our drying equipment which includes dehumidifiers and air movers to help prevent microbial growth.

Mold Remediation Mold in Howell Mold growth above kitchen cabinetry

We were recently called to action on a water/mold loss in Howell, NJ.  Unfortunately this was a case of DIY gone bad.  The homeowner did a good job of tearing out carpet pad and lifting carpet for in place drying, however the severity of this situation was too much for a DIY'er and required the assitance of the SERVPRO of Howell/Wall team.  After identifying wet drywall in several rooms, we began demolition, only to find widespread mold throughout.
